BBE specializes in audio enhancing stuff, I seem to recall them starting up about 10-15 years ago in the pro-audio realm of things.

Back in the early days, they did signal processing that improves the sparkle and punch of an audio signal. It wasn't overt (like adding delay or echo), it was subtle corrections of certain frequencies to remove muddiness. One of my friends added one to his live-performance PA rig and it really worked well.

When you turned it on, it was like someone took the pillows out from in front of your speaker cabinets. It was very subtle, but very effective for what it did.

Dunno what they do these days, but I do know that they sell chipsets to integrate into other aftermarket devices now (such as the head unit you described).

I'm having trouble locating their main home page right now (it's not BBE.com). Anyone?
