If you just need to do 5v serial to 12v serial conversion then you can use <a target="_blank" href=http://www.dontronics.com/rlc1.html>this little module</a>. You still have to do a little legwork but it just involves connecting the right cable on the module to the right place on the GPS board, you'll also need a 7805 for a power source. You can do it almost without soldering if you don't mind splicing wire.
