The quality is as good as the tivo's output. After all - it's the
source of the tivo output!

Set it to best and with a good source you would be hard pressed to
tell it from DVD (except on a large screen perhaps)

In Best, Tivo outputs somewhere around 540x576 in PAL. 540x480 in
NTSC I'm guessing.

You can use TMPGEnc to change it to full frame in order to burn
to DVD or half frame in order to make an SVCD.

The quality on best is better than most 250 pound hardware MPEG2
capture cards I've seen (eg Dazzle Digital Movie Creator II) at
the same filesize... and 1.5.2 (UK tivo version) it's apparently
not using variable bitrate!

My only niggle is the long time it takes to convert the TiVo output
into DVD suitable structure and keep the quality of the original.

It may be overkill but I was very impressed with the result of a
40hr conversion to 4.4Mbit full frame variable bitrate for a
widescreen feature film. The quality is almost indistinguishable
from DVD.
