No, I don't see how they would work.  You might have 5 "B" playlists, so you press 2 on the keypad and you get an "A" list, press it again and you get a "B", but you want the next one (which has been ordered at the other end of the menu) so you press again, but now you get a "C" playlist.

With the playlist in alphabetical order, the shortcut gets you close to your selection and you can then scroll through to it.
