Congrats, not 100% correct but enough of a clue to get me going!!!!!

Actual solution was:
[ir_translate]
KnobLeft=knob.n,knob.n,knob.n,knob.n,knob.n,knobleft.u
KnobRight=knob.n,knob.n,knob.n,knob.n,knob.n,knobright.u

i.e. an extra "knob.n" inserted!

One comment - it doesn't work on AC because there doesn't seem to be a front/rear fade option on AC!  It doesn't matter to me but it's strange this option suddenly disappears from the menu!
