The basic starting point for all of this should be the ExtractStream
web page:

http://www.9thtee.com/ExtractStream.html. It's slightly out of date,
but covers all of the basics.

That doesn't cover divx recoding, but I've read that this tool can
get the job done:

I haven't tried it myself.
