Loading ExtractStream

I've tried loading PlayStream and ExtractStream on my tivo's /var 
directory. I don't use this tivo conventionally with program guide 
etc. I have the 1.3 software version. I've used zmodem to load the 
programs from my pc & when I try to access the programs I keep 
getting the "permission denied" prompt back on the computer. I've 
tried "chmod -x" with no luck. Unfortunately I don't know linux. My 
tivo is network aware. Any suggestions for a beginner?
