While I am a newbie myself I have done a lot of reading of many sites 
lately so I'll take a stab at this
> 1. will a new Sony T60 be compatible with a Turbonet card?
a1: I think so but check with 9th tee
> 2. is it easy to bring over movies from the Tivo to a PC?
a2: 'easy' is relative but the short answer is 'not too hard with the 
right tools and setup'
> 3. once you have the movie on your PC, can it be burned directly to 
> DVD-R without any re-encoding?
a3: not if you want it to play in a commercial DVD player
> 4. what resolution is DTV (is it always 480x480)?
a4: not sure but it is not the standard DVD resolution
> 5. do you have to be a Linux guru to make sense of all this?
a5: not for the simple upgrades but I have started learning cause it 
sure seems to help understand the rest
