For those of you who haven't looked at the thread yet, it's a good
idea:

1) if you use linux for your extraction,
2) you need a SVCD that cannot play the non-standard 32KHz audio that
the Tivo puts out...

and IMHO I wouldn't call it "true 1-step extraction" - there's still
a *lot* of typing involved. It's not a "point & click" type of
operation.

Well, Scheaah!
</Wayne'sWorldMode>

Notice why he said that NFS was better - it didn't corrupt his live
video recording -- because NFS (in it's default settings) is 3x
slower than netcat & isn't nearly so taxing on the hardware... notice
he didn't mention *how long* it took to actually extract a video...

The downsides to this:

1) If you're a person with acute hearing, upconverting the audio to
44.1KHz can add unwanted harmonics to the audio which can make the
sound worse, or possibly even give you headaches. Use this option
only if your DVD player won't play the non-compliant audio.

2) He also makes reference to "TicToc's bitrate editing info" - If
you're looking for a minimum of fuss, this is good - but you'll have
to measure for the "lowest common demoninator" - aka - a lower
bitrate to guarantee that you will get all of the video on one CD
(for 1 hour shows, anyway...) and if you use the Cut&Merge function
of TMPGenc, it doesn't split the video right where you say... If
you're a person who re-encodes to get the absolute maximum bitrate
from each show, or re-encode VBR anyway, this method may not work to
your satisfaction.

3) You won't be able to use this option in Winders, unless you:
a) install the cygwin tools (which I do recommend for any
linux-head to do - it's great running bash in a dos-prompt... ;-)
b) re-compile mpg123 & sox using the gcc compiler included in the
cygwin tools.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

For those who need this kind of functionality, it could be a useful
alternative, but it doesn't seem to be the "holy grail" of Tivo video
extration...

Laterz,
