You got it!  It's also used to scroll through long manuals or program
output (with the scroll wheel).

Now try using a laptop almost exclusively for a while -- with the
touchpad conveniently located near your thumb for xterm selection.
Then go back to your workstation with the split-keyboard.  I hit the
plastic several times and was wondering why the mouse (and keyboard
focus) didn't move.  Then I realized I had to move my hand over to the
mouse and move it :-).
