Otay -- here's my setup:

Philips Tivo 20hour upgraded to 43 hour (W.D. 40Gig H.D.) with TiVo
2.0.1-001 & (of course) TivoNet. Upgraded w/TivoMad, IIRC.

Using ExtractStream w/the tympeg package,
Joe's latest splitstream (with the audio delay mods)

1 bad tystream chunk of a different program of 1Meg in size (video) -
Audio was negligible [sp?] - less than 1 second.

TMPGenc to do the mpeg encoding - settings used:
2-pass VBR encoding (looks pretty darned good for Charmed...)
Min-bitrate: 300
Max-bitrate: 3000
Avg-bitrate: 2100
1 hour, 1 minute show final size: 1,023,387 Megabytes.
Show size after trimming commercials: around 640Meg - easily fits on
a normal CD (w/room to spare.)
Motion search precision: normal
Time to encode (estimated): 8 hours.
Time to encode w/motion search precision "high" (estimated): 12
hours.
Pentium 3 1Ghz, 133Mhz SystemBus. 512Meg RAM.
CD Burner: Plexwriter 16/10/40A IDE w/burnproof (at 16x, necessary
for burning SVCD's - buffer cannot stay full, even w/1Ghz! )

Nero 5.5.5.1 - w/updated MPEG .dll file (see their website)
Can fit approx. 800Meg mpeg2 on an 80-min/700Meg CD! (that's cool!)

There's a website that says when you trim your commercials with
TMPGenc, to double-check your start/stop blocks - they mean it. There
is a bug in TMPGenc that doesn't always place your blocks on the
right frames - and the effect seems cumulative. The video I made also
seemed nearly dead-on WRT audio, but towards the end, the lag was
(methinks) around 100ms off - if the TMPGenc was breaking the video
on a non-frame border, could that cause the audio to be thrown off?

You'll see in the file included below (splitstream error output) that
the two time differences showed audio lagging of -99.111111 ms and
-32.366667 ms - I set the audio lag to -66 ms and there seemed to be
no lag at the beginning of the show.
