FWIW, not all of VirtualDub's features work with the frameserver. For
instance, you can't use VirtualDub's inverse 3:2 pulldown on frameserved
video. You need to save to a temporary AVI and encode from that.

One bit of weirdness I've noticed lately, though, is that I can't seem to
encode from large AVIs anymore. I can create a one-line Avisynth script to
frameserve the AVI into TMPGEnc, but loading the AVI directly into TMPGEnc
yields blank video. I'm fairly sure I've encoded straight from the AVIs
before, so I don't know why it's doing this now.
